Introducing your degree

Our part-time Doctor of Medicine degree programmes are aimed at students with a clinical background, who hold a medical qualification that is recognised by the UK General Medical Council (GMC) and are employed in a hospital or institution associated with Medicine at Southampton.

You will get the opportunity to study a project that is relevant to your clinical discipline whilst working with a wide variety of both clinical and non-clinical researchers.

The University of Southampton is internationally recognised for its work in Life Sciences, of which Medicine plays a huge part. As part of our thriving postgraduate community, you will get the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from a variety of interdisciplinary areas, as well as the NHS or external funders, on research that is having a direct impact on society.

As a Doctor of Medicine student, you will gain high quality training in research-related skills and professional/transferable skills enabling you to become a confident, independent researcher and return to clinical practice

You will complete a research project which may be in a clinical, laboratory or community setting and will usually have a strong translational focus.

You will be based at one of the country’s leading teaching hospitals – University Hospital Southampton – and will have access to excellent research facilities in Medicine and across the University. You may also choose to transfer to a PhD programme, subject to satisfactory progress.
