Course summary

With the evolution of streaming platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and iPlayer, the demand for media content is bigger than ever -- With recent factual productions, such as Tiger King, and Making a Murderer, being just a few notable examples of the increased popularity of factual productions. On a local level, BBC’s Two-Minute Masterpiece, and True North Shorts, are just a couple of examples of platforms for documentaries. Likewise, in the field of audio; SoundCloud, Spotify, BBC Sounds, and other platforms have contributed to the increase in podcast productions, many of which can be considered audio documentaries, such as BBC’s Outlook. Now, more than ever, it is evident that factual productions can be a great format for storytelling. As the saying goes, “truth is stranger than fiction.”

This course will explore narrative in documentary productions, and in the two years you will produce several moving image factual productions, an audio documentary/podcast, a documentary film magazine (via our Film Studies unit) and create and manage a factual film festival – in which you will display your work. Over the two years you will complete units in camera work, editing, audio recording, project management, narrative in factual film, and many more, including modules that will assist you in building a CV/Resume, career plan, and a portfolio for your work.

How will I be assessed?

Practical Projects (Short Films, Podcasts, Audio Documentaries, eMagazines, Group Pitches, Showreels, and a film Festival Project), and written assignments (illustrated reports, CVs, Career Plans, pre-production planning, and evaluations). We expect the course to be 75-80 percent practical.

Career Prospects

Students finishing our Belfast Met Film and TV courses have advanced to employment in the media industry, or have been successful in gaining admission to the second year and, potentially, final year entry of university honor's degree courses. Student work has been showcased in festivals, and in competitions, winning awards at both the Intercollege Media Competition and The Royal Television Society (NI) Student Awards. This course will also offer opportunities for work experience.
