Course summary
This Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded project in the DPhil in Engineering Science will require you to investigate a particular project in depth and write a thesis which makes a significant contribution to the field. This course is focussed on a single project funded by the EPSRC Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award (IDLA): Gas Turbine Heat Management. The industrial partner for this project is Rolls-Royce. You will acquire a wide range of research and transferable skills, as well as in-depth knowledge, understanding and expertise in your chosen field of research. You will become part of a vibrant community of researchers. Cooled Cooling Air offers the opportunity to improve the fuel efficiency of ultraefficient engines which are an important component in the UK's strategy to achieve net zero aviation. This project will explore the science of novel cooling technologies, such as phase change materials and heat transfer enhancement, for the air systems used to condition the turbine cooling air.
