Course summary

THE COURSE

This course is aimed at those wishing to pursue careers within the ecology sector.

Students will explore the issues faced by habitats and species and put forward innovative, forward-thinking, evidence-based solutions.

The programme aims to:

  • Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a broad range of UK species and habitats.
  • Provide opportunities to develop and apply understanding of key ecological principles, particularly in ecological assessment and research.
  • Provide opportunities to critically analyse and evaluate UK wildlife legislation and policy.
  • Develop graduates with the appropriate skills and understanding to allow them to enter a diverse range of employment opportunities within the ecology sector in the UK and abroad, including in ecological consultancy.
  • Set UK ecology in a global context.

The programme content is designed to be appropriate to the needs of the sector and to enable students to progress to third-year degree level study, i.e. our BSc Ecology and Environmental Management (Top Up) programme.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience is an integral part of the course. Past students have gained placements with a variety of ecological and environmental organisations, with which we have excellent links. A total of 152 hours is required in a related part of the industry over the two years of the course.

CAREERS

Careers are available with ecological consultancies, conservation non-government organisations (NGOs) in the UK and abroad, public bodies such as the Environment Agency, Natural England and local authorities, plus many more.
