You will explore pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics, against the wider background of issues surrounding education.Over the three years of study at Keele, you will learn to evaluate key educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way. You will learn about their applications to understand ways in which Mathematics can be learnt and taught. In your first year, you will study core material in calculus and algebra. In subsequent years you can begin to tailor your programme according to your own strengths and interests. For example, you can specialise in pure or applied mathematics, or explore probability and modelling. Education topics include areas from the sociology of Education, for example, how race, class and gender can impact on pupils’ educational outcomes. There are also opportunities to study such topics as how children learn, the historyof education and play in the early years.When you graduate, you might choose to do a PGCE and become a Maths teacher. There are also many other opportunities, including jobs in banking, the Civil Service, computing, financial services and retail. During your studies you may also wish to pursue further study and become a researcher or a policy analyst, learn a foreign language or gain an enhanced degree title or opt for a year abroad to enhance your CV.
