Course summary

The Education MRes is a research degree designed to build on your previous masters study and to meet your individual academic and professional needs.

It will enable you to develop and extend your mastery of theory and practice in education research, including research methods and methodology.

The programme supports the development of autonomous and critical education research and research-informed practice. It also specifically aims to consolidate your academic skills including writing for publication.

On completion of the MRes you will have a comprehensive foundation for further postgraduate research at doctoral level and high-level research-based and research-informed professional practice.

Course structure

The programme comprises a taught element which provides postgraduate level learning in education literature search and survey, research methods (quantitative and qualitative) and theoretical perspectives from the social sciences which inform the study of education.

Teaching strategies focus on developing you as a participant in a peer community of academic and professional research practice.

Teaching is in small group seminars and individual tutorials to maximise interaction and contribution. Seminars include opportunities for formative assessment through presentations to the group, and peer and tutor feedback and tutorials provide opportunities for more dedicated individual formative feedback from your individual tutor. Both forms of feedback will inform and support the completion of your assignments. Summative feedback is via assessment report feedback sheets which will then be discussed in your individual tutorials.

It will also be possible, following discussion with your individual tutor, to access sessions and online courses from university's Doctoral College Researcher Development Programme.

The majority of credits in the MRes will come from designing and executing a substantial research project. It is likely that this project will deploy field work methods learned and developed in the taught component, although desk-based research and secondary data analysis will also be accepted.

The Education MRes is designed for senior professionals in a broad range of educational and learning contexts.

It will enable you to develop your capacity to use research to address problems of professional practice alongside your professional role and will also help you to prepare for doctoral study.
