Course summary
Our research degree programme is embedded in one of the oldest and most successful centres for medical and life science education and research in the UK. It champions the value of the humanities, social sciences and arts research as a complement to the empirical, positivist approaches used elsewhere in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. This interdisciplinary setting enables us to support research that bridges academic disciplines that values lived and subjective experience alongside clinical and scientific expertise and that straddles the fields of research, educational practice and, ultimately, patients and the public. We are committed to improving healthcare and addressing inequities through innovation and enhanced understanding of clinical and scientific education. We support postgraduate research that seeks to better understand:The education and student experiences of our future medical professionals and scientists across at all career stages. Our postgraduate research builds on our expertise in clinical education, including our Master’s in Clinical Education, in experiential learning pioneered through the Chantler Simulation and Interactive Learning Centre and our medical humanities programme.Institutional culture, organisational change and policy in the context of medical and life science education. Publications by our research staff include articles and consensus statements examining the relationships between policy, education and professional practice.Public and patient perspectives, expectations and experiences of medical care and the life sciences. Our researchers include experts in creative methods that can capture the lived experience of patients and that function as health and social interventions and as public engagement in science.
