Course summary

In this rapidly changing world, a postgraduate course can serve different needs and give you that extra edge that today’s employers are looking for, or secure that much-needed promotion. Whatever your academic or professional goals, the School of Education and Human Development’s long tradition of academic excellence will help you get there. Our full-time Education Studies (with placement) MA is a 15-month taught programme with a placement that caters for the needs of those who wish to gain an MA degree through intensive full-time study. Students have a choice of modules that total 200 credits. The course has been designed to appeal to both home and international students. ''The Masters in Education Studies (with placement) has been a fantastic investment of time and money. After finishing my undergraduate degree at Bangor, I looked to further my knowledge and understanding of key areas in Education. This course helped me achieve that and more. Through the excellent teaching and support I was able to develop my writing and critical skills to high standards. This course has greatly helped my early career, and will continue to help me throughout it. I made some great friends on this course and enjoyed every minute of it.'' Josh Camilleri, who graduated with a merit in 2020 You will be able to undertake your placement at either a nursery, primary, secondary or special education school or within the University where you will observe classroom teaching, management, curricula and assessment strategies used by teachers and have first-hand experience of the UK education system. Placements will also allow you to reflect on your studies and observe how the theory is put into practice, which will help your further development and professional competence. Students must ensure they bring all documentation for a criminal record check to the School of Education and Human Development at the start of the course. Students cannot be placed at school without the required criminal record check. A number of optional modules are also available. It is possible for suitable MA students to move up to the Doctorate in Education Studies (EdD) programme after completing the five taught modules (140 credits) of the MA in Education Studies and demonstrating a high level of study at merit or above. Such students would not have to do an MA dissertation and would also need to complete a sixth module, ’Thesis Proposal’. Transfer of credit into the EdD is evaluated case by case, by the EdD Course Director, as the EdD is a research degree. After completing all the six modules, candidates for the EdD programme may be able to apply for studentships (please see the EdD programme for more information). Applications are received all year round, but international applicants are strongly recommended to apply early. The deadline for the September start is 31st July. Applications received after that date will be considered for start in the next academic year. The deadline for applications by home students is 31st August each year.
