Course summary

Your study will cover theoretical and practical aspects across the range of electrical and electronic engineering. The core topics in this course include power systems, power electronics, digital electronics, circuits and devices, electrical machines and drives. In addition to the individual project in the third year you will work on a more research based group project in your fourth year.Learn about the design, fabrication and use of a wide range of electronics, circuits, devices and power systems.Your study will take in:electrical machines and power systems such as wind turbines and the national gridelectronic devices, circuits and systems such as lasers, microprocessors and computerscommunication devices and systems such as radio frequency (RF) ​​antennas and 5G mobile networks.You’ll explore theoretical and practical aspects across the range of electronic and electrical engineering, and use computer design tools extensively.We offer a wide choice of optional modules – these cover many aspects of electrical and electronic engineering and communications.Our MEng degree is more industry oriented and more focused on the application of scientific knowledge than our BEng. Through your extensive experience of projects, you’ll develop practical transferable skills such as team working, decision making, problem solving and communications skills, which will enhance your employability.All our first-year students take part in the faculty's Global Engineering Challenge, working with students from other engineering disciplines to solve a real-world problem. All second years get to work on a week-long project devised by one of our industry partners. You'll also get the chance to work with an engineering company through the Sheffield Industrial Project Scheme.At the end of your second year you can choose an area to specialise in or continue with the more general electrical and electronic engineering, which is our most popular course.Optional placement year, Study abroad
