Course summary

Description

This new bespoke full-time Master of Energy Systems Management programme brings together the essential elements to equip and enable students from all backgrounds to become leaders in this field. You will be taught a combination of skills and competencies from a wide range of disciplines, providing you with a unique understanding of the multidisciplinary abilities needed to effectively contribute to Net-Zero.

Climate Change is an indisputable reality. Universities around the world are preparing students with the right skills to support the essential move toward Net Zero across the globe; balancing greenhouse gases produced, with greenhouse gases removed from the earth’s atmosphere.

Our new one-year full-time Master of Energy Systems Management is a bespoke new programme – delivered in collaboration between Durham University Business School and the Department of Engineering, in conjunction with our world-class Durham Energy Institute.

You will be equipped to become a leader in energy systems management, through being taught a combination of skills and competencies from a number of disciplines, providing you with a unique understanding of the multidisciplinary abilities needed to effectively contribute to Net Zero.

Delivered full-time in Durham (an additional part-time version of this programme is planned for 2022), our Master of Energy Systems Management is for students who hold a first degree which is not necessarily scientific, including those in social sciences and the arts and humanities. It will enable you to understand and support the economic and environmental transformations required as the world moves to zero carbon operation.

Course Structure

You will be immersed in both business management and the underpinning technologies of energy conversion. Introductory modules are designed to bring students with non-technical degrees up to speed with the necessary background.

Course Learning and Teaching

This programme provides training in relevant areas of business, engineering and other disciplines. This is delivered through supportive, research-led and widely multidisciplinary physical and virtual learning environments. You will develop:

· an advanced and systematic understanding of the global drive toward Net Zero and of the international activities and policies in place to support this.

· a critical awareness of current business and engineering issues and opportunities in climate change, informed by leading edge research and practice in the field.

· an understanding of existing research and knowledge to enable the identification of new or revised approaches to climate change and greenhouse gas management.

· creativity in the application of knowledge about climate change.

· you will have a practical understanding of established and advanced techniques of research and enquiry, and use them to develop and interpret knowledge in this area.

· the ability to conduct research into climate change issues, through familiarity with a range of data, research sources and appropriate methodologies and ethical issues.

· develop advanced conceptual abilities and analytical skills in order to evaluate the rigour and validity of published research and assess its relevance to new situations.

· you will also critically review and apply relevant business, engineering and other disciplinary knowledge to practical situations, as well as enhance your ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using a range of media.

Careers

The combination of knowledge about contemporary business and commercial approaches to the issues covered, together with expertise in engineering responses to the challenges raised, will provide you with a significant employment advantage.
