Course summary
The MA (Hons) in English will teach you to closely read texts across a range of genres and historical eras, and to consider the ideas, human values and historical forces that have helped shape literature. The MA (Hons) in English is a four-year course run by the School of English. In the first two years, you will read and reflect on a broad range of topics across a variety of literary genres from the Middle Ages to the present day. The MA (Hons) in Film Studies is a four-year course run by the Department of Film Studies. In the first two years, students are introduced to the key concepts, theories and methodologies of Film Studies as well as a variety of methodological and theoretical frameworks for the historical study of cinema and the visual media. This lays the foundation for more specialised and increasingly challenging modules offered at Honours level. This is a 48-month programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts (Honours). As with all St Andrews programmes, it is made up of credit bearing modules. Students must earn 480 credits over the duration of the programme, with 120 credits normally earned each academic year. Typically, the first two years of study include core modules specific to the programme as well as other modules chosen from a range of options (in some cases, including modules from a different Faculty). The remaining years offer advanced research-led learning through modules that provide a programme-specific curriculum.
