Course summary
**Why an Integrated Foundation Stage?**An Integrated Foundation Stage starts your degree studies with a year spent learning the skills required to progress onto a full honours degree. Alongside an introduction to English, you will develop valuable study skills, communication, team work and problem-solving techniques which help to build your confidence and prepare you for the rest of your course.**Why English?**Our English degree allows you to focus on pure literature, or your own blend of language, literature and practical communication. The course is assessed entirely by coursework and taught in small, interactive seminars. You’ll be able to participate in trips and events, from seeing the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Globe Theatre to lively improvisation and voice training workshops. You can immerse yourself in a vibrant local culture, which includes The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival and Cheltenham Poetry Festival, or take exciting international trips (additional costs may apply, see course web page for details). On literature modules you’ll explore the greatest works ever written in English, from traditional classics to transgressive contemporary novels. Topics include myths and legends, crime fiction, travel writing, periods from the 18th to 21st century, Shakespeare and North American writing. You’ll be able to explore the workings and history of the English language, and how it shapes identities and the world around us. English language topics include dialects, language structure, sociolinguistics or ecolinguistics, giving insights into gender, race, media and society. Uniquely, the course offers practical communication modules, instilling leadership skills in inspirational speaking, persuasive writing, active listening, constructive criticism, visual design and ethical argumentation. These skills will provide a foundation for life and employment, giving you the power to shape society. **Why University of Gloucestershire?**We’ve been using our expertise to support and inspire students since 1847.
