Course summary

English Language

This course offers you the opportunity to combine high-level study of the English language with a carefully chosen related subject.

Your first year will introduce you to the study of language in general, how sounds become words, and how words are put together to create meaning; you will develop your ability to take language apart, and through your study, you will also learn how to put it together to create clear, effective communication.

Later years offer a module in teaching English, a final year work placement module and the opportunity to study material such as propaganda and interrogation, pragmatics (looking at the gap between what we say and what we mean), psycholinguistics and the political, social, and cultural roles of language. The language you speak shapes the world you see; this degree helps you understand both better, and to make the connections between what you study at university and what goes on in the world beyond the classroom.

Journalism

This exciting and challenging course allows you to learn about the fascinating world of journalism, whilst diversifying your skill set to give you a broader range of career options.

Teaching and assessments

You will be taught by staff with a wide range of knowledge and experience in English literature and linguistics (theoretical and historical), modern foreign languages, English as a foreign language, history, international relations and American studies. Members of the team are engaged in a wide range of research projects which feeds directly into our teaching.

English Language is offered as a Joint Honours degree with Media and Journalism because these subjects are all concerned with communication and the skilful, versatile use of language, both spoken and written.Your English Language studies will be of direct benefit to your other subject, and vice versa. These are designed to be true joint degrees, where the two subjects are interrelated and complement each other.

Journalism at DMU has a strong practical focus and is taught by a range of respected and award-winning professionals and academic experts, including five former newspaper editors. Lecturers are active in newspaper, radio, magazine and digital journalism and staff have won four university-wide awards for teaching excellence.

Graduate careers

Our graduates have high-level linguistic, reasoning and analytical skills, making them very employable. We develop our students’ information analysis and presentation skills to produce extremely articulate, adaptable, professional communicators who can operate with ease in any setting and with any group of people.

Journalism graduates go on to work for some of the UK’s biggest media companies, including major newspaper groups, PR companies and the wider communications industries.

Our students increasingly find employment in the digital economy, where their ability to communicate effectively on a variety of platforms gives them a significant advantage.
