Course summary

English Language with TESOL at DMU allows you to combine the study of the English Language with the key theoretical and practical issues involved in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.The course is designed to enable you to develop your own ability to teach English to non-native speakers whilst enabling you to think about how language in general and English in particular functions in the world today. You will study linguistics, grammar, the evolution of the English language and a variety of writing styles, while also exploring the theory of how to teach English as a second language. You will acquire skills in the analysis of digital communication and the study of language through the application of digital tools and methodologies.You will develop a set of linguistic and analytical skills, which will help you become a highly-skilled communicator and prepare you for a range of careers.


Key features

Develop specialist skills in communication and presentation in order to become an effective teacher, and have the opportunity to investigate the theoretical and conceptual issues involved in teaching written and spoken language. Gain life experience by practising your language skills and networking in a different culture, with the opportunity to study abroad between years two and three. Develop transferable skills in interacting with, influencing and inspiring others which are ideal for employment opportunities in both the UK and abroad. Through our DMU Local programme students have previously gained experience in the community and helped local children learn to read. Learn from specialist teaching by experienced practitioners; ensuring the skills you develop are current to professional practice.
