Course summary

Our BA English Literature (including foundation year) is suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entrance requirements for an undergraduate course. This four-year course includes a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by a further three years of undergraduate study. Our compulsory academic skills module supplements your academic subjects. What did love, death and race mean in the Renaissance? What is the legacy of slavery in the Americas and how is this reflected in different genres of writing? How did suffragettes change the world and its literature? Whether it’s dystopian fiction, the Caribbean origins of zombie narratives or the issue of human and non-human rights in a digital age, we’ll ensure you pursue your interests to the fullest and that you’ll be supported by experts in the field. You experience a varied, flexible and distinctive curriculum focused on the study of English literature, encompassing several genres and periods including United States literature, European literature, Shakespeare and other dramatists, and 20th century literature. Alongside core modules in early modern literature and literary theory, we offer a range of optional modules that allow you to study areas of literature that are of interest to you. In your final year, you can opt to replace one of your taught modules with an independent study, which allows you to develop your own academic interests in depth.Literature at Essex has a great tradition of nurturing writers and thinkers. From past giants such as Robert Lowell, Ted Berrigan and Ben Okri who have shaped literature as we know it, to prize-winning contemporary writers such as Professors Derek Walcott and Marina Warner, Essex has always attracted people who are at the heart of defining and redefining literature. So come and study with us and find your voice.
