ENGLISH LITERATURE

If you have a passion for reading books and for thinking about the ideas they engage with and the debates they inspire, then you will enjoy studying English Literature with us. Our modules encompass a wide range of authors and genres, from well-known figures to marginalized voices and texts, ripe for re-discovery. You’ll learn to analyse and write about works of literature in their cultural and historical contexts, through lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials, here in Canterbury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You will explore areas including:

  • modern and contemporary literature
  • the Brontës, Dickens and other Victorian writers
  • the works and literary afterlives of Austen, Shelley and other Romantic authors
  • Shakespeare, Marlowe and their contemporaries on the page and in performance
  • Chaucer and the literature of the Middle Ages
  • women’s writing
  • black and minority ethnic literature.

HISTORY

You will study several exciting periods (ancient, medieval, early modern, modern), can emphasise one or more of them, and will use different historical perspectives (e.g. political, cultural, and gender). You will be taught in Canterbury (a UNESCO world heritage site), by historians who use their cutting-edge research to enrich the teaching. There are field trip opportunities.

97% of our History students were satisfied with the quality of their course.
