Course summary

Learn how different societies have shaped English literature, and how English literature has shaped society. Become a selfreliantresearcher as well as developing the skills required for the modern world of work.Our BA (Hons) English Literature will help you understand the importance of English literature; how it is affected by the culture,language, technology and economics of the period, but also how it influences readers and society itself.By studying English literature, you will also be exploring a range of other subjects, including history, politics, philosophy, religion,psychology and the history of art.You will be encouraged to work and think independently, helping you become self-reliant and critically adaptive, with the ability toconsider perspectives that are different to your own or to popular opinion. Some exercises will involve you in group work,presenting ideas and information or finding solutions to problems with others, promoting your interpersonal skills and your abilityto negotiate.As well as developing skills such as literacy and communication, which are important for any future career, you will become wellversedin the specific methods of literary research, such as bibliographies, databases and information technology.Our optional modules will also give you the chance to practise and develop your own creative writing, as well as explore theprocesses of the modern publishing industry. Your studies will be supported throughout the course by our team of Englishliterature and writing experts.
