Course summary

Our one-year Masters by Research degree allows you to explore your interests in greater depth while developing skills that’ll prepare you for further study or a variety of specialist career paths.

With the expert guidance of your supervisor, you’ll undertake an independent research project on a topic of your choice and use your findings to produce a thesis of around 30,000 words.

Unlike our Masters and MRes degrees, this course focuses entirely on research. Instead of studying taught modules, you’ll complete research skills development activities and receive support in planning and carrying out your project.

Our diverse and welcoming research community plays an active role in the intellectual and social life of the wider University. Dedicated events, research groups, and social activities will connect you with other research students from across the institution.

You’ll have access to a range of funding, training and development opportunities, allowing you to support your studies, enhance your employability, and get the most out of your time at Leeds.

You’ll also benefit from our partnerships with organisations such as Leeds Playhouse, Opera North, and Ilkley Literature Festival, as well as our links with universities around the world.
