Course summary

The research programmes in English are distinguished for research on canonical authors and on contextualising approaches to literature. We also have a strong tradition of textual scholarship. We have long standing links with other programmes, particularly History, Philosophy, Cultural History and Modern Languages.

Our research areas pages have links to individual staff pages where you can find out more about the range of research being done here.

We are open to discussing all potential projects with applicants, including the possibility of undertaking these via Distance Learning.

We have expertise in every period of literature, from medieval to contemporary, and particularly in English, Scottish, Irish and American literature.

English research activity is integrated with the a group of research centres, including:

  • Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies
  • Centre for Linguistic Research
  • Walter Scott Research Centre
  • Centre for the Novel
  • Centre for Early Modern Studies
