Course summary
This degree examines the interactions between the geology, biology, chemistry and physics of the Earth’s surface, oceans and atmosphere. It gives you a deep understanding of the Earth’s environment and how it can be influenced by human activities, together with the experience of studying in English at one of our partner universities overseas. Students on Study Abroad degrees return with an appreciation of different cultures, exciting new ideas and a broader perspective of the world, all of which can lead to enhanced career prospects. In years one and two you gain a firm grounding in earth sciences, building your knowledge to inform your choice of advanced topics to study in the following years.Your third year is spent abroad, studying units comparable to those offered in Bristol. Recently, students have been to North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Visit Global Opportunities to find out more about where you can study abroad (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/global-opportunities/).You will spend half of your final year in Bristol on a major earth science research project. A number of our previous students’ project reports have been published in scientific journals. Our close links with industry ensure that the skills you gain during your studies are valued by employers. Recent partners have included Shell, Chevron, Reykjavik Energy, Atkins, Environmental Resources Management and EDF.We have a tightly knit community and a programme of student-run projects, informal seminars and social events. Our courses include field trips in the UK and overseas, the cost of which is included in your tuition fee. You will be invited on a field trip just before your first term starts, so you can get to know your year group before lectures begin. All our environmental geoscience degrees are accredited by the Geological Society of London, and transfers between courses may be possible.
