Course summary

The Executive MSc Evaluation of Health Care Interventions and Outcomes was developed in collaboration with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), known internationally for its contribution to the quality and efficiency of health care and the scientific rigour of its approach. This approach combined with the academic excellence of LSE’s faculty has led to a unique and truly exceptional programme.

Skills in evaluating health care interventions and outcomes are increasingly important for active participants of strategic decision-making across the health sector. Combining the interdisciplinary expertise and research excellence of LSE faculty with the flexibility of executive study, this programme delivers a well-rounded intellectual and practical grounding in skills evaluating health care interventions and outcomes.

Addressing a need for qualified experts across the international health care market, the programme is tailored to participants coming from medical professions, pharmaceutical and medical devices industries, health care management, government and non-governmental organisations. The two-year modular degree is particularly relevant for clinicians and allied health care professionals at all levels, hospital administrators, executives in the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries, and regulatory agencies.

You will learn to develop, assess, and evaluate evidence of the value of products, interventions, services, programmes, and policies, including their cost-effectiveness. You begin by exploring principles and models of evaluation and principles of study design for evaluating health care interventions. You will discover conceptual rationales for economic evaluation and outcomes measures, and critically appraise scientific research. You will explore evaluation methods that will enable you to work with quasi-experimental research designs and carry out randomised evaluation of health care programmes. You will learn statistical methods of evaluation and health technology assessment.

The programme draws on a globally relevant literature and knowledge base. Employing country- and region-specific data sets and case studies will allow you to gain comprehensive appreciation of effective health care interventions across a range of income settings, compare health systems’ performance, and examine policy formulation across geographical, historical, cultural, and political settings.

Teaching methods and assessment

This is a modular programme that runs for 24 months. The programme includes a dissertation of up to 5,000 words on a topic of your choice, to be prepared in conjunction with your academic supervisor.

Courses at LSE are delivered over a minimum of 20 hours contact time. Over the course of the MSc, you will be expected to complete independent study, coursework, and revision outside of classroom engagement. You will have the opportunity to meet with your tutors, and off-campus support, such as online revision sessions, will be provided by the faculty.

Careers

This Executive MSc aims to empower health care professionals to advance their careers by acquiring skills in health services research, health economics, outcomes research and health policy. The programme will prepare you to explore new advisory, management, and leadership roles within the health care field. Beyond your current work setting, you will be able to expand your employment opportunities in related sectors, including the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries, consultancies, government, and non-governmental organisations.
