Course summary

Having a creative eye and a talent for fashion design is only half the story. If you’re going to make it in the fashion industry you also need to have the practical skills and technical ability to succeed. This course aims to give you a great head start in this exciting sector. On this course we’ll: * Give you the chance to focus on designing and making fashion garments, whilst also studying the marketing side of things, including how to create a brand and how to promote your products. * Develop your technical skills to prepare you for your career in the dynamic fashion industry. On your course, you’ll be able to use a range of techniques to bring your ideas to life, including industry-standard sewing machines, pattern cutting equipment, and software that will enable you to produce professional marketing material. * Offer you the opportunity to get a feel for the fashion industry by taking an optional placement year during the course. You could get hands-on experience with a high street name or in a small design house, working in the UK or overseas. Our Fashion Design with Marketing BA(Hons) course focuses on fashion design but adds the specialty of fashion marketing, making this course stand out from its sister routes, Fashion Design with Digital Technology and Fashion Design with Textiles. I loved the course at Huddersfield, the technicians are very supportive and easy to approach. The tutors pushed me to excel and explore my creative side. My placement year gave me a stepping stone to my future career as I now work full time at one of the placement companies I worked for that year. ~ Miranda Jackson, Fashion Design, 2019 graduate. Professional links and accreditation: This course is industry recognised by ScreenSkills (https://www.screenskills.com/), the industry-led skills body for the UK's screen-based industries, and carries the ScreenSkills quality mark which indicates courses best suited to prepare students for a career in the screen industries. This course is accredited by the Textile Institute n(http://www.textileinstitute.org/), a worldwide organisation for textiles, clothing and footwear. This was awarded in June 2017 and is reviewed every five years. The accreditation recognises the quality and excellence of the course’s provision, and that it meets the educational standards required by the relevant specialisations within the Textiles industry. Students who graduate from this course can apply for the professional qualification, Associateship and Chartered Membership of the Textile Institute, after a shorter period of work experience than is usually required, or in some cases directly on graduation. Additional Costs: Basic materials will be provided during the first and second years of the course, including pattern paper, thread and calico fabric. You’ll need to supply some of your own materials, including sewing equipment, art materials and printing. The costs may vary based on the materials you choose. During your first and second years we endeavour to gain fabric sponsorship for all first and second year projects. If no fabric sponsorship can be gained the maximum cost will be approximately £100 per student in Year 1 and £200 per student in Year 2. In the final year you’ll need to supply the materials you require to produce your major collection. There is no limit on the amount you may wish to spend, however as a guide, costs in recent years have ranged from £200 to £1500 per student for this project.
