Course summary

Having a creative eye and a talent for fashion design is only half the story. If you’re going to make it in the fashion industry you also need to have the practical skills and technical ability to succeed. This course aims to give you a great head start in this exciting sector; we want to give you the chance to study in a stimulating environment so that you can build up your aesthetic, intellectual and multi-disciplinary skills. On this course we’ll: * Develop your awareness of, and skills in, contemporary fashion design, innovative textile applications, industry standard pattern cutting and garment manufacture techniques. While you’re here we’ll help to develop your portfolio of skills to professional standards, through fashion and textile design, illustration, CAD, pattern cutting, and garment manufacture. * Offer you the opportunity to explore contemporary design for menswear, womenswear, and gender neutral. Awareness of sustainable practice is embedded throughout the course too. * Give you the chance to become technically prepared to start your career in the dynamic fashion industry. On your course, you’ll be able to use a range of technology to bring your ideas to life, including industry-standard sewing machines, computer aided embroidery, laser-cutting, digital ink-jet fabric printing, as well as pattern cutting equipment. Competitions and live briefs, along with an exciting schedule of visiting speakers from industry, will give you the opportunity to be inspired, and truly engage with this diverse industry. Fashion Design with Textiles is one of our newer courses within the school. This course focuses on fashion design but adds the speciality of textile design as a raw material for fashion design through surface embellishment and fabric manipulation. We’ll give you the opportunity to design constructed textiles, such as knitwear, making this course stand out from its sister routes. The four years I have spent studying Fashion have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It has been difficult and pushed me to my limit many times, but the rewarding feeling at the end of each academic year was amazing and graduating after four years of studying makes all the difficult times worth it in the end. I'm really thankful for everything I've studied and amazing friends I've met along the way. ~ Sophie Leek, Fashion Design with Textiles BA(Hons) 2019 graduate. Professional links and accreditation: This course is accredited by the Textile Institute (http://www.textileinstitute.org/), a worldwide organisation for textiles, clothing and footwear. This was awarded in June 2017 and is reviewed every five years. The accreditation recognises the quality and excellence of the course’s provision, and that it meets the educational standards required by the relevant specialisations within the Textiles industry. Students who graduate from this course can apply for the professional qualification, Associateship and Chartered Membership of the Textile Institute, after a shorter period of work experience than is usually required, or in some cases directly on graduation. Additional Costs: Basic materials will be provided during the first and second years of the course, including pattern paper, thread and calico fabric. You’ll need to supply some of your own materials, including sewing equipment, art materials and printing. The costs may vary based on the materials you choose. During your first and second years we endeavour to gain fabric sponsorship for all first and second year projects. If no fabric sponsorship can be gained the maximum cost will be approximately £100 per student in Year 1 and £200 per student in Year 2. In the final year you’ll need to supply the materials you require to produce your major collection. There is no limit on the
