Course summary
Our Fashion Technology degree combines a wide range of clothing and fashion-related studies, helping you learn how to create commercially successful products.
Overview
Learn the skills that bring creativity to life in the real world. This course is the only fashion technology programme in the UK that includes a fully integrated placement as part of the standard programme. So, you’ll not only learn how to develop great ideas, but also how to use commercial design and the latest technology to turn them into successful fashion products.
Multi-disciplinary skills. Practical knowledge. Real-world experience. This course helps you develop a well-rounded skillset that can help you succeed in a wide range of exciting roles within the fashion industry.
Take advantage of our links to the fashion world. We’ll give you the opportunity to work on exciting, real-life projects — our students recently made garments for global fashion brand Barbour. During your third year, you’ll put your skills to the test in an industry setting, giving you the perfect opportunity to make industry contacts and take another step closer to your dream career.
The course is taught in our Scottish Borders Campus, which sits close to the heart of Scotland’s luxury textile industry. This is your chance to study in an area that’s home to some of the UK’s top design and production facilities for textiles and fashion.
Teaching and Learning
The overall approach in the programme is a teaching and learning focus with a student-centred and resource-based learning and teaching environment, which is designed to enable students to undertake activities, which require complex skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation within very practical contexts, which promotes a deep approach to learning. Skills related to Subject Mastery are fundamental to all courses in the programme, which reflects the aim to produce graduates with the knowledge and skills relevant to the needs of the fashion industry in fashion design, development, manufacture and marketing. Core knowledge and understanding are acquired through initial motivational lectures and thereafter through tutorials, open learning resources and projects. Subject-specific skills are acquired and developed through a combination of laboratories, tutorials, problem-solving classes, computer-based learning packages, group presentations, project work and industrial collaborations.
Assessment
The assessment policy for the programme incorporates a range of assessment types. Formative tests are scheduled during courses to provide feedback on performance and are used to inform further development. Continuous assessment during courses and summative assessment at the conclusion of courses both contribute to the overall assessment and are used to measure formally, achievement in specified learning outcomes.
