Course summary

This course has been designed with a focus on the practicalities of animal husbandry and welfare science, whilst developing a sound understanding of the wider business and educational aspects of an animal organisation. By the end, our graduates will have the necessary skills and knowledge to maximise the welfare of a wide range of captive species; the business knowledge to operate independently or support business growth; the skills to engage with the public to provide vital educational experiences and the confidence to work autonomously with a range of species in a variety of settings. The inclusion of academic skills and research modules will also provide a solid foundation for further study.

Learners will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills within the Bicton College Animal Zone, which is not only a purpose - built teaching facility but also a fully licenced zoo collection.

Industry links to other animal organisations and zoological establishments allow a broad range of opportunities. With smaller group sizes than other Higher Education Institutions, learners can benefit from a more personal educational experience where individuals can flourish.

Practical skills are integral to the course, with dedicated practical modules and those with applied elements to ensure application of knowledge in the field.

This course is also offered as a 3 year part-time option at Bicton College.
