Course summary

At Keele University, we’re proud to be consistently ranked in the Top 3 UK universities for student satisfaction, which is testimony to the safe, supportive and welcoming campus we hope you’ll soon call home.As both a medium of mass entertainment and a mode of expression, film is a powerful art form. Studying Film at Keele provides insight into its forms, technologies and cultural importance, both historically and now.The Film Studies programme at Keele looks at the medium in local and international contexts, combining a focus on British and other national cinemas with the analysis of an increasingly global film culture. It combines exploration of the history of film as an industry, art form and technology, with analysis of its most contemporary trends, including film’s relationship to television. Led by experienced lecturers and researchers, the programme at Keele enables students to grasp the significance of film across cultural contexts, its importance as a mode of popular entertainment, and its centrality to expressions of individual, national, transnational, racial and sexual identities. You will also have the opportunity to combine theoretical and historical study with creative filmmaking practice options.A degree in Film Studies can be a starting point for careers in film and television, whether your particular interest is in direction, screenwriting, editing, production or marketing; as well as being a vital foundation for teachers and critics of the medium. Film Studies at Keele can also open up a wide variety of other career options in media and education, as well as publishing, advertising and events management, and a range of other related fields.
