Course summary

You will study a balance of modules dedicated to various aspects of film theory, history, and practice. Through the core module you will explore key concepts in film theory, film programming, film criticism, and researching in film archives.

You will also explore a range of theoretical issues related to spectatorship and visual culture, and learn to read and appreciate the screenplay. You will also engage with other kinds of critical writing about film, including journalism, reviews, and interviews.

Through a series of archival case studies you will develop important research skills and learn how to use unpublished archival sources in your research and writing.

You will also choose further optional modules from both theory-based topics and practice-led options, ranging from documentary film-making to a module on working with actors.

We have previously offered masterclasses by leading film practitioners, such as the writer-director Bill Forsyth (Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero) director and producer Don Boyd, and writer-director Simon Rumley.
