Course summary

Overview

Combine your academic and professional writing projects on our MA in Film Studies: Popular Cinema. And build a broad portfolio of writing and research skills.

You will develop a historically-informed and critically aware understanding of film as:

  • an industry
  • an art form
  • a cultural product.

Our diverse teaching staff team are film specialists with different national and cultural backgrounds. Our advisory panel contributes to the course and our annual series of Film Studies events, including an annual Careers Day. The panel includes film industry experts such as leading directors, journalists, producers and technical specialists.

We cover the history and theory of popular cinema in:

  • the US (classical and contemporary Hollywood)
  • Europe
  • East Asia (especially Japanese cinema).

Modules on story development and research methods will sharpen your writing skills in preparation for your dissertation project. You have the opportunity to go to the Cannes Film Festival on our field trip.

You will finish your course with the skills for a career in either academia or the media industries.

Career prospects

Having a master's qualification helps you to stand out from the crowd, whether you are joining the MA straight after graduating or returning to study after a break of several years.

Our MA will provide you with the skills and knowledge to embark upon a career in the creative and media industries or to improve your current position. However, an MA in Film Studies can also lead to careers in many other sectors, including:

  • teaching
  • lecturing
  • publishing
  • arts administration
  • journalism
  • museum work
  • fundraising
  • higher education management.

The transferable skills you acquire through studying for an MA also open up wider opportunities in business and law. Many MA students continue onto further research and careers in academia, and our course provides the necessary research training required for doctoral work.

Students can also exit with Pgdip/PgCert awards.
