Course summary
Our BSc Finance will prepare you for a career in economics, banking and finance, with a focus on finance. It provides an entry route for both private and public sectors as well as for further academic studies. After core modules in finance, macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative analysis, you will study more applied macroeconomics and microeconomics as well as financial topics such as asset pricing and corporate finance. The wide choice of optional modules in your final year, which may include modules from other Schools such as e.g. Business Management, will allow you to direct your studies to the areas that interest you most. The latter would range from quantitative methods in finance to corporate strategy and management of technology. The quality of teaching and research within the School of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary has been widely acknowledged. In the 2017 National Student Survey (NSS) we were ranked number 1 in London for student experience. We are a young and international School with staff from all over Europe and beyond, who have links to important institutions in the City and further afield. Our established exchange programme allows you to spend either a year in the USA, Australia, Singapore or China or a semester through the Erasmus scheme either in Italy or Spain. The School offers excellent resources to our undergraduate students. Our students have the exclusive use of two computer labs and ten Bloomberg terminals which give students access to the latest financial software used in the banking and finance industry. We also subscribe to the major statistical databases, and software packages such as those used by economists in finance or in government for data analysis and simulation.Besides being able to choose from a wide range of study options, every year the School of Economics and Finance organises various guest speaker lectures. So, you will be able to attend a varied programme of lectures and talks. Some of the invited speakers in the past include Mark Carney, Silvana Tenreyro, Tim Harford, John Roemer, Lord Meghnad Desai, Charles Goodhart, Rt Hon Roy Hattersley, Dan Corry, Robert Peston, Scott Page, Frank Allen, Lord Sebastian Coe, Richard Lipsey, Richard Layard, and Sanjeev Goyal. We aim for the BSc Finance degree (as others of our degrees already are) to be accredited by IMC (Investment Management Certificate) of the CFA UK (Chartered Financial Analyst) so that students graduating from this degree will be able to register for the IMC exam and gain a valuable professional qualification highly sought after in the finance and banking industry.
