Course summary
Our BSc Finance with Accounting with Foundation Year is a joint degree course which gives you the opportunity to acquire accounting skills as well as an extensive knowledge of the financial sector. This finance with accounting degree offers you a well-integrated interdisciplinary core, allowing you to obtain a broad and balanced perspective. You will begin with basic training in principles of: - finance - financial reporting - management accounting. Following that, you will gain expertise in the fields of: - corporate finance - taxation - auditing.You will also be able to tailor your degree to your interests with a range of options in topics which may include portfolio management, behavioural economics and finance, financial markets and other accounting-related modules from the Department of Management. Birkbeck’s BSc Finance with Accounting with Foundation Year is suitable for anyone whose ambition is to work as a financial analyst in investment banks and other financial institutions, regulators or economic consultancies.Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will automatically progress onto our three-year, full-time, evening study BSc Finance with Accounting.We also offer part-time Foundation Year degrees which allow you to spread out your Foundation Year studies over two years. As the 'Foundation Year' is made up of 120 credits, as a part-time student you can take 60 credits in each of your first and second years before starting the main four-year BSc Finance with Accounting. This means that you can take six years to complete the part-time degree with Foundation Year.**Highlights**- Our Foundation Year degrees will fully prepare you for undergraduate study and are ideal if you are returning to study after a gap, if you have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or if you didn't achieve the grades you needed for a place on your chosen undergraduate degree.- The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics brings together research and teaching in economics, finance, mathematics and statistics in a single department which creates significant interdisciplinary synergies.- In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), more than half of our research outputs in Economics were ranked world-leading or internationally excellent.- You will be taught by academics who are professional practitioners in the world of economics and international finance, and who provide specialist advice and in-house training for government departments and City firms and banks.**Careers and employability**Graduates can pursue career paths in the financial sector, economics or accountancy.
