Course summary

Explore new and emerging art as well as historical and contemporary forms with our BA Fine Art with Integrated Foundation.

Through this four-year degree, you’ll develop as an artist as you experiment with a range of subjects and media.

Your first, foundation year will introduce studying fine art, as well as university life. For example, you will:

  • learn the processes and expectations of studio practice through projects, workshop training, talks and group work
  • gain an introduction to art history
  • develop your core skills, including researching, academic study, and writing
  • have access to specialist support and guidance
  • become fully integrated into life at the University of Reading.

As your studies progress, you’ll explore art in its historical, theoretical, social and cultural contexts, and develop your guided independent studio practice through:

  • one-to-one tutorials, group seminars, lectures and visiting artist talks
  • exhibition opportunities
  • workshops
  • visits to museums and art galleries.

Our courses will equip you with the knowledge, intellectual ability and practice-led skills you need to make an imaginative and effective contribution to the art world – or the wider creative industries. Overall, 93% of our graduates are in work or further study within six months of graduating, (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey, 2016/17).

As well as producing world-famous artists, Turner prize nominees, and representatives for Britain at the Venice Biennale (Cornelia Parker, Mike Nelson, Bob and Roberta Smith), at Reading School of Art we equip students to be highly employable in a wide range of fields.

Recent employers include Manolo Blahnik, the London Metropolitan Police, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the BBC and University College London.
