Course summary

Financial markets are becoming ever more innovative and dynamic, with the growth of financial technology, or Fintech, helping to accelerate that change. Studying this course should help prepare you for a career in Fintech, or provide you with the knowledge needed to operate effectively in other financial sectors being disrupted by technology.

With a focus on the practical application of theory, this course seeks to develop the skills needed by the modern finance graduate, offering a grounding in financial theories coupled with developing the digital fluency needed to apply them to the rapidly changing finance sector. So, alongside developing and expanding your knowledge in key theories such as asset pricing or corporate governance, the course also focuses on financial technology, big data analytics, and the management of risk in digital environments.

During the course, you’ll have the opportunity to get hands-on training in programming using Python and/or R, big data analytics and data mining, as well as having access to Coventry Business School’s Trading Floor (subject to availability), which utilises market leading databases such as Thomson Reuters Eikon, Bloomberg and Fitch Connect. You’ll also be taught by academics with industry experience, alongside those with research expertise in the world of finance, and have the opportunity to extend your course with professional experience.

Course information

The MSc FinTech is designed to prepare graduates for exciting potential future careers, in sectors such as investment banking, financial services, and financial technology. It aims to provide a solid grounding in key areas of financial theory, such as derivatives, corporate finance and quantitative methods, before focusing more directly on financial technology, offering an overview to the rapidly growing sector, as well as how to manage risk within it, and how it can be applied in a practical sense to financial firms and their activities.

The course also offers the chance to undertake a practical module on data analytics, Data Analytics using Python/R, which is designed to prepare you for the increasing importance of the skill in the modern financial world. Incorporating programming languages such as Python and/or R, which are focused on data science, the module will allow you to develop your ability to extract, manipulate and evaluate financial data from multiple sources, utilising computing techniques, to draw reasoned and relevant conclusions.

Career prospects

Through the development of core financial knowledge, alongside Fintech knowledge and capabilities, this course should prepare you to pursue a career in Fintech, or in finance more broadly, in sectors such as investment banking or financial services. You could find yourself working for a Fintech start-up, or within a large financial institution, applying Fintech techniques to improve processes, services and products.

In addition, due to the nature of finance and its relevance to all organisations, this course could help you to develop knowledge which you can then apply to other business careers, public sectors jobs or to pursuing your own aspirational ambitions.

You will be supported as you look to plan your future career by our Talent Team, who aim to offer personalised support tailored to the sectors that interest you.
