Course summary

- Develop your personal and professional skills in readiness for degree-level study.- Explore a range of contemporary health issues to enhance your knowledge of the health and social care sectors.- Acquire an important foundation of knowledge and skills in science or social science.- Prepare for a degree in adult or mental health nursing, operating department practice, radiotherapy and oncology, or learning disability nursing and social work.This course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for undergraduate health and social care courses. During the foundation year, you will learn together with students who will be progressing on to a range of health courses as well as students aiming to progress on to a range of sport related courses too. You will develop your skills and academic knowledge in readiness for degree-level study.


How you learn

All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.In the foundation year, you build your knowledge alongside developing your academic skills. You'll gain valuable skills in information gathering, project and self-management, written and oral communication, and digital work. You will explore a range of contemporary issues affecting the health of the nation, and consider the impact of current health policy and the delivery of care.You receive face-to-face feedback regularly during your modules in order to prepare you for the completion of your assessments. This will be via tasks set for you to undertake in the module seminars or in your independent study time.You learn through:- lectures- seminars- tutorials- project supervision- practical classes and workshops


Applied learningLive projects

You will have a chance to investigate an area of interest in more detail by completing a project. This will allow you to obtain a deeper knowledge of the core principles in science or social science as relevant to your chosen degree course.

You are encouraged to make contact and develop relationships throughout the foundation year with students and staff as relevant to your study area.
