Course summary

Our BA French and History will allow you to pursue a wide array of historical interests while studying the most widely spoken native language in Europe. Knowledge of French will give you the edge as a budding historian as it offers access to an expansive French-speaking scholarly literature and primary sources relevant to European and international history. You start your language studies at the right level based on your existing ability in spoken and written French. You’ll have excellent resources to support you at the Centre for Language Study.You'll be able to follow your interests thanks to our flexible course structure and wide variety of modules, supported by lecturers who are experts in their fields. You'll explore a wide range of topics in history, including conflict and culture in world histories, empires, and the First World War.Our year abroad destinations include France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Guadeloupe, Martinique and La Réunion. Our digital humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre. These technologies enable you to explore in new and immersive ways.
