Course summary

This programme offers you the opportunity to study the French language, while exploring the development of languages, generally, and the literatures and cultures of Francophone countries. French is a major world language, in Africa as well as in Europe and Canada. Its art and thought have played a central part in creating our modern civilisation. Studying on this programme will lead you to near-native fluency in the language, thanks to our four years of intensive training, including a year abroad. At the same time, you will explore French culture - its literature and cinema, but also its political history and philosophical ideas. As a large subject area, French and Francophone Studies at the University of Edinburgh can offer you a wide range of courses spanning the Middle Ages to the 21st century, including specialist options taught by leading experts in their fields. Studying Linguistics as part of this joint programme, you'll learn: - how language is acquired, produced and understood - how language functions in interaction between individuals and in society - what language's abstract structure is and how it is represented in the brain - how language changes over time You'll have the opportunity to formulate and test scientific hypotheses about linguistic phenomena, and will learn to use specialist equipment and software for analysing the sounds of a language.
