Course summary

Create and develop the next generation of innovative video games for one of the fastest growing industries worldwide.

Course overview

Our Games Development degree aims to produce industry-ready graduates with all the skills, knowledge and experience required to successfully enter a career in computer game design. Our game design courses teach the programming, design, artistic and professional skills used across the industry, using the same tools and software used by real-world developers. There is a focus on creating full, portfolio ready work, integrating all taught skills into individual and group-based projects.

Why study this course with us?

The Department of Computer Science is an innovative, forward-thinking department with a strong rate of student satisfaction and employability. Teaching quality at the University is highly rated, and the staff on our course are no exception, lead by a Programme Leader with 20 years of games industry experience, and over 30 published commerical game credits.

The course is taught at Thornton Science Park, a modern location that is home to an extensive range of purpose-built facilities, providing you with excellent opportunities to build your learning and practical experience. This offers the best of both worlds - a professional environment to work in undistracted during the day, and an exciting campus life out of hours.

In addition to receiving tutoring, mentoring, guidance and support from academic staff, you may also experience events featuring industry professionals, or perhaps work on an extra-curricular project such as a game jam with your peers. We also work in conjunction with the Informatics Centre, an on-site software development team where students may be employed to work on commercial projects.

Teaching methods

Modules will generally be presented through weekly lectures and practical workshops, where you will be able to work both individually and collaboratively.

Assessment is predominately through individual practical development assignments and written reports throughout each module. Some modules also have an exam component at the end of the year.

Job prospects

Graduates of this course typically enter the games industry in any one of a number of roles, such as programmer, technical artist, tester, 3D modeller, software engineer, level designer, project manager or environment artist. It is also excellent preparation for those wishing to start their own, independent games company after graduation.
