Course summary

If you are naturally curious about our planet and interested in finding solutions to global problems, then this course could be for you. You will learn about the physics, chemistry and history of the Earth through hands-on examination of earth materials such as rocks, minerals and fossils, and using remote sensing techniques such as seismic waves to explore the structure and chemistry of its inaccessible areas. You will also study in English at one of our partner universities overseas. Students on Study Abroad degrees return with an appreciation of different cultures, exciting new ideas and a broader perspective of the world, all of which can lead to enhanced career prospects. In years one and two you will gain a firm grounding in earth sciences, building your knowledge to inform your choice of advanced topics to study in the following years. Your third year is spent abroad, studying units comparable to those offered in Bristol. Visit Global Opportunities (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/global-opportunities/) to find out more about where you can study abroad. In the fourth year back in Bristol you will study advanced topics, then undertake a major research project in the second half of the year. A number of our previous students' project reports have been published in scientific journals. We have a large geology collection and the ability to measure unique geochemical reactions, giving you an insight into geology in practice.
