Course summary
Combining German with philosophy allows you to explore fundamental philosophical concepts and questions while studying a leading language of European philosophy. Apart from being the largest native language in Europe, German is famously the language of Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Marx. German and philosophy both require a strong critical mind, imagination and the ability to communicate clearly and with flair. Southampton has research strengths in 19th and early 20th century German philosophy and you will have the opportunity to engage with the works of famous German philosophers such as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Heidegger. You will spend year three in a German speaking country. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. Philosophy offers a high number of contact hours with teaching conducted in small groups. Our research-led teaching is delivered by recognised world experts on contemporary philosophy and the history of the subject, and we achieved the seventh highest score in the UK for published work (REF 2014).
