Overview
Our course gives students the opportunity to study media industries in the heart of London – one the world’s media capitals. It’s been specially designed for those aspiring to work within the media industries, providing students with the practical experience, digital and transferable skills they need for their careers. With its mix of theoretical, and sector-based knowledge and skills development, our course will provide you with a critical grounding, conceptual understanding, practical experience, applied knowledge, real-world insights, and the opportunity to not only understand but to reimagine the future of the global media industries.
Course detail
This future-facing new master’s course is specifically designed to meet the needs of contemporary media industry professionals and students. You will learn the vital importance of the different political, cultural and economic in the digital and global media industries through exposure to a range of local, regional and transnational examples. You will develop digital skills, practical experience and transferable skills including project management, research methods, excellent communication, and collaboration – in preparation for careers in the digital media workplace. Whether you are seeking a career in the media industries, or if you are a professional looking to enhance your existing knowledge and career prospects, then this course is ideally suited for you. Current media professionals may combine work with the part-time study option. You can also use the training and skills gained on the MA in Global Media Industries to prepare for doctoral research in the media and creative industries and associated disciplines. The course allows you to engage with a range of media organisations from across the city of London to offer you unparalleled exposure to the media sector. Through our required modules, you will engage with experienced media professionals and leading London-based media organisations. Whilst the MA does not include an internship, we usually have a dedicate member of the academic staff (although this is not guaranteed due to Covid-19) who assists students interested in acquiring practical experience through sharing information about competitive internship opportunities offered by our cultural partners or other organisations across London. In parallel to the programme, previous students from within the Department have succeeded in independently securing internships at a wide variety of arts and cultural institutions, including the National Theatre, Barbican Centre, British Council, British Film Institute, Hayward Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Screen Digest, The British Museum, CIDA (Cultural Industries Development Agency), MTV, Donmar Warehouse, Google and the V&A Museum, which gives you an idea of the exciting opportunities on offer.
Teaching and assessment
Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include essays, reports and presentations. Coursework contributes 100% to your final mark.
Career prospects
Graduates from our Department use the skills and knowledge that they develop with us to pursue careers in arts management, curating, the film industry, museums, teaching, journalism, and a range of other cultural and creative roles within the global media industries. Others have continued their studies with further research.
