Media makeup artists are the creative professionals who get actors, presenters, or models ready for their close-up. This can include fashion, editorial, film, television, and theatre work.

The OCN NI Level 5 Extended Diploma in Hair and Beauty Management (Media Makeup pathway) provides a recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment in the Media Makeup sector who wish to progress to management positions, or onto further higher education in a related area.

The Media Makeup pathway of this programme provides learners with the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills by undertaking specialist units taught by highly experienced staff. You will learn a wide range of applications such as character makeup, aging, Special FX, prosthetics, casualty, and bodypainting, alongside developing your managerial skills, to give you the confidence to progress your career to the next level. This course has been developed in line with the most up-to-date industry requirements and the qualification will provide the learner with a solid foundation to develop their career to managerial level within this exciting industry.

Career Prospects

There are many local, national, and international career opportunities open to the qualified makeup artist including working as Freelance Makeup Artist, a Photographic Stylist or a Special Effects Makeup Artist.

You could work in theatre or on film sets, TV, and fashion shows. On completion of this Level 5 qualification, management opportunities exist within the industry, you may decide to start your own business or wish to work within the education sector.

GCSE/National 4/National 5 : C

Applicants should have 4 x GCSEs at grades C or above to include English and Maths, or an alternative level 2 qualification in Numeracy and Literacy. Also have achieved Level 3 Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Makeup studies or equivalent. Applicants should be proficient in written English. Applicants should have access to a suitable salon where they will be supported in a management or supervisory role.
