Course summary

From clinical consultations to health care policy, language plays a key role in promoting health, building understanding, and navigating the emotional impact of health care.

We will explore the role of language in a diverse range of health care settings, concentrating on established approaches used to analyse and interrogate health care interaction - from narratology and corpus linguistics to conversation and discourse analysis.

With a focus on research methodology, you will investigate language and communication from interdisciplinary perspectives. There is also the opportunity to specialise, via optional modules, according to your own interests and research.

The course is run by the University’s Health Language Research Group, whose members include clinical practitioners and scholars. It is affiliated with the schools of Health Sciences, Sociology and Social Policy, and English Studies. Most students complete this course in 2 years. Under some circumstances, you may be able to change your course duration. You will need to discuss this with your course director. Please note, if you are in receipt of a Student Finance England loan, a mid-course change may affect your payments.
