Course summary

You will benefit from the disciplines of both history and languages, and can bring them together looking the development of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, the creation of modern Latin America and Lusophone Africa, the complexity of culture and history in Spain and Portugal.We take beginners in Spanish and students with an A-level in Spanish. For beginners you can be someone with no Spanish or someone with a GCSE. Those of you with an A-level in Spanish will take beginners Portuguese in your first year after which you may carry it on to the final year. This gives you the chance to study countries such as Portugal and Brazil, as well as Spanish speaking countries during your third year abroad.Our non-language Hispanic Studies modules cover the history, politics and cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds. Our range of modules looks at specific aspects of the different nations, cultures and histories of this global community, from sixteenth-century expansion to today.In History, you will learn about how history is written, debated and researched. You will explore history in different periods and regions and, in your final year, you will work on individual projects for which you will undertake your own research.
