Studying for a degree in History and Welsh History at Aberystwyth will take you on a journey of discovery, opening your mind to the experiences of different people and places through time. A degree in History and Welsh History will allow you to place the past in perspective, and to gain the analytical skills of interpretation, analysis and communication that are so vital to employers. History has been taught at Aberystwyth University since the late nineteenth century, making the Department of History and Welsh History one of the most established in Wales and one of the foremost in Britain. The interests of our lecturers span the period from antiquity to the modern world, so we can provide you with a broad range of political, social, economic and cultural history modules from many eras and several continents. As a major centre of Welsh and Celtic scholarship, Aberystwyth is home to a wealth of books, newspapers, paintings, photographs and manuscripts relating to the history of Wales and her people. With an emphasis on cultivating a supportive learning environment, that includes one-to-one tutorials and small group teaching, we will help you realise your passion for the past. As well as specialist skills of research and analysis, you will also acquire personal skills to communicate your ideas effectively and a range of transferable skills required in most graduate workplaces. In addition to a fine University library, as a History student at Aberystwyth, you will have access to the National Library of Wales. One of only five copyright libraries in the United Kingdom, with over six million books, maps, prints and manuscripts, it is situated within a five-minute walk of campus, and you will find this an especially valuable and useful resource when studying your special subject and writing your dissertation in your third year. Our History degree graduates are sought by employers for their highly developed research, analysis, teamwork and communications abilities.
