Course summary

Discover the people, ideas, and events that shaped the world we live in today. You'll explore different time periods, places, and cultures-from medieval life to the modern world-across Britain, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Our expert teachers are passionate about history and will help you uncover hidden histories, challenge myths, and understand how the past still influences the modern world. In the core modules you’ll explore key periods, from medieval and Tudor England to the world wars and modern events like the Arab Spring. You’ll also learn about heritage, public history, and even the history of history itself. You can choose optional topics like the Vikings, the American Revolution, homelessness, youth culture and more. Along the way, you’ll develop skills in researching, analysing, and understanding complex information as well as a deep understanding of the past. You can also learn a new language for free-either as part of your degree or just for fun! Take our Professional Skills module and take advantage of the paid internships offered exclusively to Birmingham students. You can also choose modules from other departments - from Art History to African history to Anthropology and beyond. You’ll be assessed in different ways to suit each module. At the start of a module, you’ll be told how and when you’ll be assessed. Methods will vary but may include coursework (e.g., essays), group or individual presentations and projects, exams, reports or computer-based assignments.
