Course summary
Why History?
Our History degree equips you to understand the make-up of our own identities as individuals, cultures and nations, by investigating and interpreting evidence. You’ll develop essential research and analytical skills as you study and specialise in subjects including British, European, American and Soviet history. Gain practical experience working with a range of historical sources, through partnerships with local and international organisations, museums, archives and historical sites. The Cotswold Centre for History and Heritage, for example, is a project that takes original research of our students out into the community. You’ll draw on the expertise of experienced lecturers and professionals to develop your investigative skills and abilities in handling historical documentation and artefacts – from manuscripts and photographs to film and artworks. Our students also benefit from the insights of a range of guest speakers, such as Bonnie Greer OBE, journalists Tim Stanley and Gary Younge, and holocaust survivor John Dobai. There is even the chance to undertake fascinating field trips and placements within the UK and overseas, to locations such as Ireland, Canada and the USA (additional costs may apply, see course web page for details). Students have recently been to Córdoba in Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
