Course summary

Our BA History with Foundation Year offers you a huge range of modules, stretching around the world and across thousands of years. The degree combines this wide choice with a carefully structured framework which will help you to build your skills as a historian year on year. Our expertise underpins our teaching. We are one of the very few history departments in the UK to include archaeologists, classicists and historians working on every period from prehistoric humans to Ancient Greece to medieval, early modern and modern societies. Our expertise encompasses much of the globe, with over 40 specialists in, for example, Ancient Rome, medieval Byzantium, colonial India and modern China, as well as Tudor London, Nazi Germany, and much more. You will be able to pursue interests in British, European and global history, and explore themes within histories of ‘race’, migration, gender and sexuality. The BA History with Foundation Year gives you the opportunity to acquire analytical skills and critical approaches that will enable you to assess historical evidence for yourself and question accepted wisdom about the past. You will enhance your career prospects by developing the ability to formulate and communicate your own ideas effectively. We help you to develop these skills systematically through three 'How to' modules which form the backbone of the degree. For these modules you will join other students and experienced historians to explore the study of the past together.Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you can automatically progress on to our three-year, full-time, evening study BA History. We also offer part-time Foundation Year degrees which allow you to spread out your Foundation Year studies over two years. As the 'Foundation Year' is made up of 120 credits, as a part-time student you can take 60 credits in each of your first and second years before starting the main four-year BA History. This means that you can take six years to complete the part-time degree with Foundation Year.**Highlights**- Our Foundation Year programmes will fully prepare you for undergraduate study and are ideal if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or if you didn't achieve the grades you need for a place on your chosen undergraduate degree.- We are an international centre of excellence. Since 2001 we have consistently been in the top ten departments evaluated by the Research Excellence Framework (REF).- Situated in historic Bloomsbury, we are at the heart of academic London with access to unparalleled research resources. Situated very close by are: the Institute of Historical Research and the Institute of Classical Studies, with their specialist libraries, training facilities and seminars; the British Museum and other world-class galleries and museums; and the British Library, the largest national library in the world.- The Department of History, Classics and Archaeology is home to thriving student societies and a number of affiliated research centres that actively run seminars, conferences and other events where some of the world's best scholars present their latest research.- Get a flavour of the Department through the wide range of free online and in-person seminars, workshops and tasters; check out our Discover the Past and Taster programmes as well as events at the Raphael Samuel History Centre, a leading centre for public history which the Department co-directs.
