Course summary

Course Information

This is a two-year course that aims to give you the technical skills needed to work as a higher-level technician within the construction and property industry. There are three main pathways: production and management; quantity surveying; and building surveying.

The course is delivered in partnership with the University of South Wales (USW). The goal is for you to progress (with further study) to an Honours Degree at USW and subsequently become Full Members of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB); Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS); Association of Building Engineers (ABE); Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT); etc. dependent upon industrial experience and vocational bias.

What Will I Learn?

In year 1 you will gain an understanding of the underlying principles and practice of construction and design for low and medium rise buildings and structures. In addition, you will gain experience in the use of CAD software.

In year 2 you will extend your knowledge into site practice, financial planning, building law and an introduction to site surveying.

Assessment

You be required to complete a range of assignments and examinations appropriate to each module. The overall qualification is drawn from a range of level 4 modules totaling 120 credits.

Career Progression

Completion of the USW Foundation degree will allow entry onto Year 3 of their 5-year part-time BSc courses.
• BSc Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management
• BSc Project Management (Construction)
• BSc Building surveying Alternatively, it is possible to apply for associate membership of the RICS.
