Course summary

Data is everywhere and affects every aspect of our lives and our society – from fitness trackers to online shopping to social media. Data is used to understand human behaviour, and to inform policy, journalism and strategy. Understanding how and why data is used, and the societal and ethical implications of doing so, are at the heart of this MSc.

This course is for you if you’re a graduate with an interest in data and data-driven methods that can be applied in the social sciences, business and the humanities. On the MSc, you’ll explore modern information and communication technologies; the python programming language; probability theory, statistics, linear algebra and calculus; machine learning techniques; ethics and interpretability. You can choose to focus your studies on digital media, or on innovation and policy. You’ll learn from experts at the forefront of their fields. Collaboration with our industry partners will give you career development opportunities.


There’s strong employer demand for skilled people in artificial intelligence and data science. The UK Government’s Digital Strategy predicts that within 20 years, 90 per cent of all jobs will require some element of digital skills.

As a Human and Social Data Science graduates, you’re well prepared for a wide range of careers in many fields, including: online retail and marketing; economic policy research for developing countries; media production; innovation and technology policy; technology and engineering; management, finance and banking; the Civil Service; teaching and academic research.
