Course summary
At Keele University, we’re proud to be consistently ranked in the Top 3 UK universities for student satisfaction, which is testimony to the safe, supportive and welcoming campus we hope you’ll soon call home.Studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Human Biology and Mathematics.Human Biology is ideal if you’re interested in biology but are looking for a particular focus on the human body and how we’ve adapted to our environment. This course provides a broad understanding of the physiology of the body’s major systems as well as human health and disease. The Human Biology course starts with a core first year with option modules becoming a major part of the course in years 2 and 3. A number of modules in the second and third year address issues that relate to our ever changing lifestyles and have a global perspective, including nutrition, advances in scientific research and technologies and parasitology that have improved our understanding of health and disease. The multidisciplinary approach to Human Biology is supported by input to the programme from staff with diverse expertise in wide ranging aspects of Human Biology including Medical School staff and research and clinical staff at Keele University, University Hospitals of North Midlands and the Guy Hilton Research Centre (affiliated to Keele University and NHS - a world-leading centre for translational research), physiotherapists, geographers and conservation biologists. Our Maths programmes are designed for students with varying education backgrounds and you need not have taken Further Mathematics at A Level. To make your transition from A Level to University Mathematics as smooth as possible we have:• a very carefully designed first year curriculum;• a multi-layered student support structure;• rapid feedback on coursework;• considerable experience in teaching, examining and moderating A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and in school/college liaison. You will learn to use maths to develop precise and logical arguments, construct rigorous proofs, and formulate solutions to new problems. You will study in an intellectually stimulating environment amongst mathematicians producing world-leading research. Over the years we have prided ourselves on providing a friendly and supportive environment for students. In particular, by the end of your degree, you should feel that you know the staff well and that they know you. There is an option to take this degree over four years, by adding a year abroad studying (in English) at one of our partner institutions – which could be anywhere from Australia to Finland, Japan or the USA.Human Biology graduates have pursued diverse careers including industry, genetics research, medical statistics, scientific writing, management and sales. Several Human Biology graduates have gone into Medicine while many enter into MSc or PhD degree programmes. Human Biologists also enter careers dictated by the other subject of the combined degree programme including finance, journalism and teaching.Mathematics helps you to take novel approaches to problem solving and make critical interpretations of data and text; your skills will be in demand wherever there’s a need for logical thinking. An extremely wide range of career paths is open to mathematicians, where high levels of mathematical ability are desirable. This can include fields of work as diverse as finance, data analytics, teaching, engineering, medical statistics and management consultancy.
