Course summary
At Keele University, we’re proud to be consistently ranked in the Top 3 UK universities for student satisfaction, which is testimony to the safe, supportive and welcoming campus we hope you’ll soon call home.Studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Human Biology and Psychology. On this course, you will integrate understanding of our physiology with the holistic and behavioural approach of psychology. Modules cover topics such as health and disease, social, cognitive and biological psychology and research methods. Human Biology provides a broad understanding of physiology whichcomplements the Psychology programme. You will be challenged with exciting ideas and findings from psychology and human biology. In Psychology, you will deal with social and developmental psychology, cognitive and biological psychology and research methods. A number of modules in Human Biology address issues that relate to our ever changing lifestyles and have a global perspective, that have improved our understanding of health and disease. Human Biology has a multidisciplinary approach supported by input from research and clinical staff and conservation biologists. In your final year you will carry out a research project in each subject under theexpert guidance of an academic staff member. Examples include psychological impact of pain, detrimental effects of school bullying, inflammatory responses in vascular pathology, antimicrobial effects of plant derivatives. You’ll benefit from a supportive environment as well as fantastic lab facilities and equipment. You can add a year with an Applied Life Sciences work placement or one year Study Abroad Placement between the second and third years. The psychology modules on this course are accredited by the British Psychological Society, a necessary first step for many professional careers in psychology, such as clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, occupational or sports psychology, and a prerequisite to becoming a Chartered Psychologist. Human Biology graduates combining with Psychology have pursued diverse careers including industry, genetics research, medical statistics, scientific writing, management and sales. Several Human Biology graduates have gone into Medicine. Alternatively this combination makes excellent preparation for postgraduate study in the subjects of Psychology or Human Biology.
